Workers erected a temporary bridge to carry two lanes of traffic on
heavily traveled Interstate 80 in New Jersey within two days of a
spectacular June 22 truck crash. The resulting inferno severely damaged
concrete girders of a four-lane bridge segment. The 30-ft-wide, 90-ft-long
temporary steel bridge was supplied by Acrow Bridge, Carlstadt, N.J.,
and installed by IEW Construction Group, Trenton. Crews bolted steel
I-beams to the damaged structure's concrete slabs. Repairs also call
for Union, N.J.-based Della Pello Contracting to pour 7,500 tons of
asphalt with fills up to 6 ft deep. So far, the repair bill has reached
$2 million, says the New Jersey Dept. of Transportation.
