Detour Bridges
re-open Hwy.11 ...twice! |
 |
 |
LATCHFORD,
ONTARIO, CANADA- When
the Sgt. Aubrey Cosens VC Memorial bridge was closed on
Jan. 14 , 2003, due to a structural failure, a quick response
was needed to re-open Highway 11 (Trans Canada Highway).
Alternate routes were lengthy, costing truckers time and
income not to mention the lost revenue to local businesses
who rely on the steady flow of traffic.

Two
lane bridge, under construction on left, dwarfs the single
lane bridge on right. Damaged highway bridge in background. |
The
first phase of the solution was the installation of a 45
m, single lane Acrow Panel Bridge. This involved building
a rock fill causeway approximately 80m long to reduce the
water crossing to 30m. Despite temperatures as low as –
40 degrees C., the combined bridge and causeway were designed
, and constructed in just 12 days. Traffic started flowing
again on Feb. 27, 2003.
The Acrow Bridge has an 4.1m
wide, orthotropic steel deck with an epoxy, aggregate surface
for skid resistance. The bridge and causeway were built
by Miller Paving Limited of New Liskeard.
Phase two is the installation
of a 125 m, 3 span, two lane, Acrow Bridge.
This bridge will be in place
for approximately 9 months while the existing highway bridge
is being repaired. Once the two lane detour is open to traffic,
the single lane detour bridge and causeway will be removed,
thus re-opening the river to a more natural opening. Again,
despite bitter temperatures the bridge was assembled, launched
and jacked onto it’s bearings in just 13 days. All that
was left was the installation of the steel decking and completion
of the roadway approaches. The general contractor is Aecon
Construction of Brampton.
