NEWS RELEASE - December 1, 2000 - Acrow Limited - Bolton, Ontario, Canada When Ontario Ministry of Transportation engineers discovered that a 62 year old bridge was deteriorating at an alarming rate, the decision was made to expedite its replacement and the opening of a detour. The detour bridge was originally planned for a May 2001 opening. It was now required immediately.
Within 10 days of the "go ahead" the first of many truck loads of steel began arriving on site. On Nov. 7, the launching roller layout was started and by 2 am on Nov. 17 the bridge rested on its bearings. An additional ½ day was needed to install the steel deck units and the bridge was complete. The bridge was completed well ahead of schedule. The bridge, weighing 230 metric tonnes, was cantilever launched (rolled) into place using a 40 meter launching nose. The launching nose is used to shift the center of gravity of the combined launching nose and bridge system to 65 meters from the leading edge of the nose. Shifting the center of gravity maintains the fulcrum point behind the "Home" abutment and keeps the bridge from tilting into the river. Once across, the nose is removed. The bridge is now lifted one end at a time off of its rollers and onto its bearings using a 175 ton crane. Using the crane saved significant time over using hydraulic jacks. Acrow had its engineers on site working 14 hour days providing guidance during the installation. Acrow provides detour bridges and permanent bridges throughout North America and the world.
